Veg Journal - 2010 NovemberWe still managed to harvest a few things from the greenhouse this month, but mainly we were picking cabbages and root veg, and tidying away the netting cages as the butterflies were gone. The overwintering peas and broad beans were planted, and we had our first snow of the year at the end of November.
Week ending 8th November5th - Picked a cherry tomato & a very small pepper (½oz) as the stem of the latter was going mouldy. 8th - Picked 3 cherry tomatoes & 5 plum tomatoes (1 had fallen off the plant). Week ending 15th November9th - Harvested the 1st leek (12oz trimmed). 10th - Sowed the over-wintering broad beans (Aquadulce) and peas (Meteor). 11th - Extremely windy - the broccoli has gone a bit diagonal. 13th - Cut the French beans down & also one of the cherry tomato plants. Tried to prop up the broccoli but the canes aren't up to the job. Stakes next year maybe? Picked a pepper (1½oz). 15th - Harvested 2 leeks, 1 autumn cabbage, 3 carrots (6oz) & 5 tomatoes. Week ending 23rd November16th - Picked 2 carrots (5oz), a turnip, some kale & 1 plum tomato. 19th - Made 6 smallish jars of apple & ginger chutney. 23rd - Took the netting off the carrot bed, and the cages down from that bed and one of the brassica beds. Straightened out the bent tube & bundled all the tubing up. Week ending 30th November24th - Picked all the remaining small tomatoes (14) and plum tomatoes (5), and all the peppers (8), prior to a predicted very cold spell starting. 27th - Snowed overnight (1"). Picked 4 carrots & 1 head of celery. 28th - More snow overnight. Picked 1 carrot - the ground is very hard. 30th - Snowed on and off all day. One of the broccoli plants is bent over almost double. Must use better supports next year. Brushed snow off the greenhouse roof. |
