 Veg Journal - 2010 December

We had our coldest month for years, and rather than doing any gardening, it was more a matter of working out how to get the vegetables out of the ground!

Week ending 8th December

1st - Heavy snowfall overnight - possibly 12" in total. Removed the final net from the parsnips as it was weighed down with snow. Brushed the snow off the greenhouse roof again - couldn't open the doors as they were frozen up, but everything except the asparagus looks dead. One broccoli plant is definitely bent over, brushed snow off the rest.

2nd - Managed to get into the greenhouse and pulled up the marigolds. The minimum temperature had been -10°C in there.

3rd - The potatoes are going mouldy in the potting shed - it's probably too cold.

4th - Pigeons are eating the broccoli shoots, so we put pea netting over them.

5th - Put enviromesh over the other brassica bed as the pigeons are having a go at the kale. Picked 1 parsnip, 3 carrots & some kale.

7th - Harvested 2 leeks - almost frozen solid. Pigeons are still getting at the brassicas.

Week ending 16th December

9th - Picked 3 carrots (8oz). Noticed the watering can has frozen solid & is deformed - is it redeemable? Also the bottom has broken off the other birdfood bin (it's full of ice) - could use as a 2nd potato grower, or a mint bucket.

12th - Picked 3 carrots & 1 parsnip.

16th - Picked 1 carrot (9oz!), 2 parsnips, 1 leek, 1 swede, 1 head of celery. Tidied the veg plot (lots of mushy leaves on the chard & broccoli). Pulled out the last mushy autumn cabbage. Emptied the greenhouse except for the asparagus - trimmed them down. Put the reformed watering can in the greenhouse!

Week ending 24th December

21st - The ground is so hard, couldn't get leeks out for the gammon. Managed to dig up a few carrots though (7oz).

22nd - Got some carrots & 2 leeks out of the ground.

24th - Picked 4 parsnips & some carrots.

Week ending 31st December

25th - Merry Christmas!

26th - Picked a savoy cabbage & some carrots.

27th - Picked 3 carrots.

29th - Picked 1 big carrot.
