 Veg Journal - 2011 January

Although the snow eventually went, January was an exceptionally cold month and it had a bad effect on the stored potatoes. Surprisingly, some of the over-wintering peas and broad beans were coming through, which encouraged us to go and buy the seed potatoes, onions and shallots for the year.

Week ending 8th January

2nd - Picked one big carrot & some kale (the whitefly are still alive!). Found the potatoes in the shed were suffering from the extremely cold temperatures.

3rd - Picked the equivalent of 4 large parsnips for making soup.

4th - Sorted out the rotten / rotting potatoes & brought the rest inside for washing.

Week ending 24th January

19th - Picked 1 leek, 1 parsnip & 4 or 5 carrots sometime since the last journal entry.

20th - Picked 3 leeks & 2 carrots. Two broad beans are poking through.

23rd - Picked 2 carrots. Two more broad beans are through!
