 Veg Journal - 2012 June

Our latest journal entries are here...

Week ending 8th June

1st - The runner beans are through - they probably were yesterday, but it rained all day so we didn't look.

2nd - Picked 2 radishes.

3rd - Propped up another 2 of the tomato plants in the greenhouse - they really need stringing up properly as soon as possible.

4th - Weeded out a lot of nettles from around the compost heap, and weeded the paths around the raised beds. Pulled up the remaining swedes along with the broccoli and kale plants. Dismantled the frame from the broccoli bed.

6th - Earthed up all the potatoes - some haven't come through so they've probably rotted in all the rain we've had. One of the plum tomatoes had snapped its stem, so we replaced it with one of the spares and put strings on all the other tomatoes except for one of them, which seems to be a tumbling variety on closer inspection - it does have a tomato forming on it though! Noticed that one of the aubergines has a big flower bud. Picked the first rocket leaves (it's got grey aphid already) and also the first peas (1lb 5oz; 8oz shelled).

7th - Planted up the spare plum tomatoes in buckets and put them in front of the potting shed. Also planted up the spare aubergines and peppers - 2 aubergines in front of the outhouse, 2 peppers and an aubergine in a trough by the front door, and the remaining pepper squeezed in the greenhouse border by the door. Swept the path by the compost heap as it was getting covered in compost.

8th - Really horrible wet & windy weather today - had to tie up the 2nd batch of broad beans as the wind had mangled them somewhat.
